Years ago I crossed the desert in a cheap econobox  with a cassette player laying on the dashboard powered by six D cell batteries.  As the miles flew by Ry Cooder’s ‘Paris Texas’ would be in heavy rotation. Back then the desert was a thing. Shells of abandoned cars dotted the landscape. Victims of the heat that weren’t worth the money to tow back into town. You paid attention to your gas gauge and your temperature gauge. The sides of the road were littered with cars by those that didn’t.

Nowadays all the small towns are bypassed by the interstate, our cars have better radiators but the light still plays on the distant mountains at sunset and the empty beauty of the desert remains.

Later in life I would travel through these same deserts in better, faster cars, zipping along at close to triple digits.

I would catch glimpses of dirt roads that shot off of the pavement towards mysterious mountains far off in the distance.

I knew someday I would explore these. And this for the most part is what led me to buy my first truck.

There is no such thing as the perfect rig.

Each of these was more than capable for what I needed. A platform to get off the beaten path and be able to camp once I got there.
